Time to Plant Evergreen Trees, Shrubs and Hedges

Now is a good time to plant evergreens and evergreen hedges. Water them well and keep them watered over the next few weeks, especially if the weather is windy, under they have rooted out into the surrounding soil. Soak potted evergreens in a bucket of water for half an hour before you plant them to ensure the rootball is moist right through. If you plant them dry, it can take a long time for the rootball to become genuinely moist and the roots can suffer for it.

Look out for weak specimens (there are always a few) in recently planted hedges of beech, hornbeam, thorn, holly and pivet. Cut them down to 20cm to make them shoot harder and fill out the bottom of the hedge.

Make sure autumn-planted evergreens are kept watered during dry, windy weather until they are established. Rocking in the wind tears at new roots and it is worth staking them lightly for a few months to let them take better hold.
